Saber Fazer Portugal – Direção-Geral das Artes

‘Saber Fazer’ is Portugal’s national strategy for the safeguarding of traditional crafts and skills. It promotes knowledge transfer, sustainability and territorial cohesion by bridging urban-rural divides, turning ancestral techniques into tools for cultural and economic resilience.

The ‘Saber Fazer Portugal Program’ was one of the winners of the 2025 European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards. This video was produced to promote and publicize the Program.

Creative concept

To introduce the film conceptually, I propose distilling the millennia of human craftsmanship and artistry into a visually striking, instantly graspable duality: hand and mind.

We go beyond the act of creation itself, connecting it to the moment that precedes it, the spark, the synapse that carries generations of knowledge and ignites creation.

Visually, we’ll linger on artisans in close-up, where hand meets mind. Gestures that appear everyday (rubbing temples, running fingers through hair, pressing the eyes) become charged with meaning, emblematic of creative thought in motion.

Through both imagery and our chosen personas, we emphasize the continuity of knowledge, the power of memory, and its seamless integration with contemporary culture: memory and moment, past and present converging in creation.

The Hand and the Mind

There is something timeless, almost instinctive, in everyday gestures.
Gestures that hint at purpose and process.
Gestures passed down from generation to generation—refined, renewed, reborn.

Such is the nature of craft.
The art of saber fazer—knowing how to make—is a quiet revolution of identity,
A living legacy passed on, contagious in spirit, affirming what it means to be human.

And it is the richness of this human condition that weaves across Portugal a vast, living tapestry of knowledge.
Nurturing this network is the mission of the Saber Fazer National Programme.

Preserving traditional practices.
Passing on knowledge to new generations.
Fostering mindful living and sustainable consumption.
Elevating the status of artisanal goods.

The Medium and the Material

Here, it is hard to tell what is born, and what is brought to life.
Every living material bears the imprint of its maker.
Every crafted object carries the memory of its origin. It binds us to it.

It honours the cycles of life with intelligence.
It reveals technique through meticulous care.

The ancestral potter’s craft preserves our cultural heritage—
From the wheel’s spin to the firing of Black Clay.
In the art of Embroidery, thread, stitch and needle hold stories.
Bobbin lace is woven with mastery.
Wool is carded, spun, and woven by hand.

From wicker, the basket, the giga, the ceira.
From split wood, the grand harvest hamper.
Palm weaving teaches patience, one strand at a time.
Bulrush holds form with graceful strength.
The Palitos de Lorvão sharpen the senses.
The fire of Cutlery flirts with alchemy.
Tinsmithing feels cold to the touch—
But the Guitars strike a deep emotional chord.

From object to process, from raw matter to landscape, from people to stories—
Saber Fazer finds its most visible expression in its digital platform.
A repository of knowledge on Portuguese artisanal creation.

The Territorial Intervention Labs are vibrant centres that reactivate traditional practices within communities.
Each Lab inscribes its findings in a book of knowledge.

The Saber Fazer Routes are open journeys—
With no fixed start or end—each traveller maps their own path through the world of crafts.

The Map and the World

The Programme’s future reaches beyond borders.
It is a future of openness, rooted in community.
A future of new ideas and new participants.
Of immense potential for international growth.
Of dialogue and the safeguarding of cultural diversity.
